WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Former President Trump wouldn’t say whether he had spoken to House Majority Leader Mike Johnson (R-La.) about the bipartisan border deal currently in negotiation in the Senate.

Trump spoke at a press conference after meeting with Teamsters officials in Washington D.C. “And a lot of people do call me and they respect me and they say, what do you think?” he recounted.

A border bill had looked to be making its way through Senate negotiations when reports surfaced accusing the House GOP leadership of souring out on a deal before the Senate even sent the full text to them. Speculation led some to believe that Republican’s rhetoric shift came at the request of the Trump team, allowing them to campaign on the border crisis.

“Well, you know, I want to see a great bill, if we get a great bill, we should do it. If we don't get a great bill. But I don't think you're going to get a great bill,” Trump reiterated. In the past, political leaders have avoided coordinating legislative plans with current candidates.

Trump was also skeptical about a Teamsters endorsement.

“The Teamsters, I think, support me,” he opined. But he immediately followed up saying, “Now I don’t know if the top people will support me. We're going to have to find that out.”
